Everyone knows that carrots are good for your eyes and in fact, that’s true. The Beta-Carotene present in carrots is a specific form of Vitamin A and it has been shown to positively influence the health of the retina and maintain overall eye function. However, you knew that, right? So, here are 5 other forms of food that have great benefits for the health of your eyes. Curcumin in Turmeric is one such superfood that benefits your eyes immensely.

LEAFY GREENS

Leafy green vegetables, aside from being an important source of dietary fibre, have two chemicals in them – lutein and zeaxanthin that act as natural filters in our eyes. They prevent harmful ultra-violet from penetrating the surface of the eye, which in turn prevents degeneration of the eye. The National Eye Institute has shown that supplements with these chemicals can also benefit eye health.

TURMERIC

We admit that we have a preference for Turmeric related benefits but we feel that these benefits ought to be validated by experts too. Dr. Radha Ayyagari who is a Ph.D. at the University of California says that she has conducted research, which shows that Curcumin in Turmeric has clear benefits for the photoreceptors in your eyes. She has synthesized a form of this, which might be injected into the eye for instant benefits though medical trials are still ongoing for this.

Curcumin – The magic compound in Turmeric

Curcumin, the active compound in Turmeric is a  brightly coloured orange/yellow carotenoid pigment and is classified further as a Xanthophyll.  Zeaxanthin and Lutein, the super-nutrients of the eye are also Xanthophylls. While only Zeaxanthin and Lutein are concentrated in the light-sensitive retina, The Anti-oxidant properties of Curcumin benefits eye health and helps to lessen the oxidative stress related to Ocular surface issues (occasional dry eye) and age-related eye health issues.

ALMONDS

FATTY FISH

Then you may suffer from dry eye syndrome. So get eating fish and you’ll soon be feeling much more comfortable when you look around you. Modern research shows Vitamin C has a powerful effect on the overall health of our eyes and it may also ward off cataracts in old age too. There are no better natural sources of Vitamin C than citrus fruits and berries. EGGS

However, if you eat too many eggs, you might prefer not to have a great sense of smell all of the time.
